Video: Armed Man Holding Hit-and-Run Suspect At Gunpoint

13th Sep 2016

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – A video sent to KRQE News 13 by a viewer shows an armed man holding another man, suspected of hitting a bicyclist and fleeing, at gunpoint until police arrive.

Albuquerque Police confirm a bicyclist was hit by an SUV Friday morning. The bike the person was riding was then dragged by the vehicle as it left the crash scene.

Soon after, however, an armed citizen got the suspect out the SUV and held him at gunpoint while calling police.

APD said they didn’t know what led to the confrontation between the two men.

At the scene, KRQE News 13 crews saw what appeared to be the bicyclist in the back of an ambulance being tended to by paramedics on southbound Pan American Frontage Road between Montgomery/Montaño and Jefferson.

The SUV, with the bicycle still underneath it, was all the way on the Montgomery/Montaño overpass at I-25, nearly a mile away.

That’s where the confrontation happened between the suspect and the armed citizen, as seen in the video.

The video was sent to KRQE News 13 by eyewitness Vern Hershberger, who says the suspect was pleading with the armed man not to shoot him and apologized for hitting the bicyclist.

Sources told KRQE News 13 that man is 33-year old Henry Martinez, an MMA fighter in the area.

KRQE News 13 checked the metro court website and found Martinez booked in jail for leaving the scene of an accident and driving with a revoked license

It’s also unclear what happened to the armed citizen.

APD would only say the bicyclist is expected to be OK.
