PROVO — A shot was accidentally fired through a window of the Utah County Attorney’s Office last week.
Utah County Attorney Jeff Buhman confirmed Wednesday that a concealed weapon carrier in his office brought a newly purchased handgun to work last week. Another concealed weapon permit holder asked to see the weapon.
Buhman said the other person “did not properly clear it and discharged a round” through a second-story window. No one was injured in the incident.
Both the Utah County Sheriff’s Office and Provo police were contacted and unsuccessfully looked for the fired round, Buhman said. Investigators believe it ended up in the grass somewhere outside the county attorney’s office.
Buhman declined to release names Wednesday or say whether the person who fired the shot was an attorney. He said employees in his office are allowed to carry concealed weapons if properly permitted. He even noted that they “somewhat encourage it because of the nature of work we do.”
Buhman said carrying concealed weapons is fairly common in his office, particularly among prosecutors who have been threatened in the past.
“Appropriate” internal action will be taken against the person who fired the shot, he said.
